Scherenschnitte Patterns

I have mentioned before that scherenschnitte (paper cutting) is very similar to scroll sawn portraits. The only difference is the medium in which we work. But the principles of design remain the same. Since the two art forms are so similar, us scrollers can easily look to scherenschnitte for patterns and inspiration. I recently came across a great collection of scherenschnitte patterns available for download. The collection also includes the Back Street Collection, an archive of out-of-print scherenschnitte books made available to the public. The patterns are provided in JPG format for easy scaling and printing. There are so many wonderful patterns to choose from, you won't know where to begin. Check it out!

  1. I'd love to try some of the patterns, but at the bottom of the website page it says they are not to be duplicated for personal use???

  2. I'd contact the website administrator for clarification. It's kinda silly to put the collection online if they don't want to share it. I believe Jeanette Holme made the Backstreet collection available. I know she can be contacted through the Scherenschnitte Yahoo Group at:

  3. Are these really free to use? I am learning this art and would like to use the patterns for personal use or to gift someone. Please clarify. Thanks a lot.

  4. I cannot officially say one way or another since I'm not the website administrator. However, I did contact the uploader/owner of the files. The disclaimer on the bottom of the screen refers to the website content, not user-submityed content (ie, the pattern collection). You are free to use them. I'd contact the administrator if you intend to sell the work, however. But if you're learning, I wouldn't sweat it. That's what they're there for.
